First Name: Luz (Astara) Years Dancing: 9 years in total taking instruction including 2 years of Flamenco-Sevillanas and 6 months of Ball Room Dance, but I have loved music and dance since I was a little girl. Years Belly Dancing: 3 in Colombia, 4 in U.S.A. Why belly dance? I was watching the news one day when I saw they were interviewing a lady who was talking about “Samkya”… a dance that combines Arabic, Egyptian, Hindu and Flamenco. I fell in love instantly! My life changed from that moment on...! Samkya is a therapeutical dance that balances the energy of all chakras helping you to recover your feminine energy, the beauty, the fluidity, the sensuality and the magic in women. Samkya mixes movements from all of these dances to unlock the stiffness in our physical, emotional, mental and spiritual body. Samkya means “to flow” letting that your sacred woman manifests herself in a magic dance with the universe. When I moved to Lakeland, I found Samira with the belly dance classes in Kelly Recreation Complex and I have had the blessing to continue learning this wonderful and beautiful art with her and most importantly I have had the opportunity to meet extraordinary women who share the same joy as I do. Why did you join Shimmy Mob? I first heard about Shimmy Mob from Amanda on FB, and then from Beverly who signed up as the team leader for Lakeland. I joined Shimmy Mob because is an international event that has two main awesome purposes: to celebrate World’s Belly Dance Day showing it as a true art and at the same time to raise awareness and funds to support the victims of domestic violence. We are dancing for a great cause! And the cool part… all the belly dancers around the world will be dancing the same choreography on the same day, with the same t-shirt and black pants! What do you do when you’re not dancing (job / career)? I studied Tourism Administration, I also finished a Bilingual Secretarial Program and I studied Languages: English, Italian, a little bit of French and a little bit of Japanese. In Colombia I worked in a few travel agencies and as administrative assistant for several years with Japanese organizations. I have worked as an administrative assistant in the U.S.A. also. My favorite hobbies: to listen to music, to travel and to take and share pictures.
